Skiascopy - instrumental method of investigating refraction (the ability of the eye to refract light). This type of diagnosis is based on the observation of the shadow movements, which is formed when light hits the pupil of the eye.
At the beginning of the research, a beam of light from the illuminator is directed to the patient's eyes in a darkened room. Turninig the skiascope (a small mirror with a concave and flat side and a hole in the center), the doctor follows the movements of the shadows on the fundus. Proceeding from the position of this shade, the doctor concludes if there are refractive disorders - hyperopia, myopia or astigmatism.
Skiascopy allows not only to detect abnormalities, but to successfully correct it by glasses or lenses, and also to control the speed of disease development and the effectiveness of the prescribed treatment.
